Description

The New York Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a delicious combination of seasoned ground beef, melted American cheese, and fresh toppings served in a toasted hoagie roll.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef, 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls, split
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon neutral oil for sautéing

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1/2 teaspoon neutral oil. Sauté diced onion for 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Break apart with a spatula and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, chopping and stirring frequently.
  3. Sprinkle seasoned salt, black pepper, and garlic powder evenly across the beef mixture. Continue to cook until beef develops a crispy, browned texture.
  4. Spread American cheese slices evenly atop the hot chopped beef. Allow cheese to melt, then use a spatula to mix the cheese thoroughly into the meat.
  5. Butter the interior of each hoagie roll with unsalted butter. Toast cut-side down in a clean skillet over medium heat until golden.
  6. Spoon chopped beef and cheese mixture into each toasted roll. Top with tomato slices, shredded lettuce, mayonnaise, and ketchup as desired.

Notes

  • Feel free to customize the toppings based on your preferences.
  • For a spicier version, add jalapeños or hot sauce.
  • This sandwich is best enjoyed immediately while warm.
