- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef, 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 8 slices American cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon neutral oil for sautéing
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1/2 teaspoon neutral oil. Sauté diced onion for 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Add ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Break apart with a spatula and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, chopping and stirring frequently.
- Sprinkle seasoned salt, black pepper, and garlic powder evenly across the beef mixture. Continue to cook until beef develops a crispy, browned texture.
- Spread American cheese slices evenly atop the hot chopped beef. Allow cheese to melt, then use a spatula to mix the cheese thoroughly into the meat.
- Butter the interior of each hoagie roll with unsalted butter. Toast cut-side down in a clean skillet over medium heat until golden.
- Spoon chopped beef and cheese mixture into each toasted roll. Top with tomato slices, shredded lettuce, mayonnaise, and ketchup as desired.
