Description

Delicious and festive King Cake Donuts perfect for celebrating Mardi Gras.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons whole milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Green, purple, and gold sanding sugar or sprinkles (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 12-cavity donut pan with nonstick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and lemon zest.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Spoon or pipe batter evenly into each cavity of the prepared donut pan, filling approximately 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until donuts spring back when lightly pressed and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Allow donuts to cool in the pan for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. Whisk together powdered sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and pourable.
  9. Dip each cooled donut into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off before placing on a wire rack.
  10. Immediately sprinkle each glazed donut with green, purple, and gold sanding sugar to create the King Cake appearance.
  11. Allow glaze to set completely before serving, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Notes

  • Make sure not to overmix the batter to keep the donuts light and fluffy.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of sanding sugar based on your preference for sweetness and color.
