Delicious and festive King Cake Donuts perfect for celebrating Mardi Gras.

- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 to 3 tablespoons whole milk (for glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
- Green, purple, and gold sanding sugar or sprinkles (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 12-cavity donut pan with nonstick spray.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and lemon zest.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Spoon or pipe batter evenly into each cavity of the prepared donut pan, filling approximately 2/3 full.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until donuts spring back when lightly pressed and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow donuts to cool in the pan for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
- Whisk together powdered sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and pourable.
- Dip each cooled donut into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off before placing on a wire rack.
- Immediately sprinkle each glazed donut with green, purple, and gold sanding sugar to create the King Cake appearance.
- Allow glaze to set completely before serving, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Notes
- Make sure not to overmix the batter to keep the donuts light and fluffy.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of sanding sugar based on your preference for sweetness and color.
