Description

A delicious recipe for candied yams with butter and cinnamon, perfect for a comforting side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2.5 lbs yams (sweet potatoes), peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, optional
  • Ground cinnamon for sprinkling, optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Boil Yams: Place peeled and cubed yams in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes until yams are tender when pierced with a fork.
  2. Drain Yams: Drain yams thoroughly using a colander and return them to the warm pot.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Add butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, milk, and vanilla extract to the yams.
  4. Mash Until Smooth: Mash until smooth and creamy using a potato masher or hand mixer, adjusting milk as needed to achieve desired consistency.
  5. Season to Taste: Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Serve: Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped nuts and a sprinkle of cinnamon if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Ensure yams are cut evenly for consistent cooking.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar and spices according to your taste.
  • For a vegan version, substitute butter with plant-based alternatives and milk with a non-dairy milk.
