Description

Baked Apple Donuts are a delightful autumn treat, combining the flavors of apple pie in a baked donut form, perfect for a cozy fall day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For Apple Pie Filling:
    • 1 1/4 cup diced gala apples (about 23 medium apples)
    • 1 ½ tbsp salted butter
    • 3 tbsp brown sugar
    • 1 tsp apple pie spice
    • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • For Donuts:
    • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
    • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
    • ½ tsp baking soda
    • ¾ cup brown sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • ¾ cup low fat buttermilk
    • 3 tbsp salted butter (melted)
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • For Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
    • ¼ cup white granulated sugar
    • 1 tbsp cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp salted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. For the Apple Pie Filling: Peel, core, and dice the apples.
  2. Heat a sauce pot over medium heat, add butter and sugar, and mix well.
  3. Add the diced apples and stir. Sprinkle in flour and apple pie spice, mix well and cover, lowering heat to medium-low.
  4. Cook until the apples are softened, stirring every few minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  5. For the Donuts: Preheat the oven to 350℉ and grease a donut pan.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, whisk eggs, brown sugar, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Sift in all dry ingredients and mix until fully incorporated.
  8. Add the cooled apple pie filling mixture and combine using a spatula.
  9. Transfer the batter to a piping bag.
  10. Cut the tip off the piping bag and fill each donut cup, almost to the top.
  11. Bake for 11-12 minutes and let the donuts cool on a wire rack.
  12. For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping: Melt butter and mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  13. Brush the top of each donut with melted butter and dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat evenly. Place back on the wire rack and repeat with all donuts.

Notes

  • Ensure that the apple filling cools down before mixing it into the batter.
  • Use a large piping bag or do the filling in two batches for easier transfer.
  • Fill donut cups evenly to ensure uniform baking.
